birdsong

I really enjoyed the recent BBC adaptation of Birdsong. I can’t remember the last time I saw something on TV that was shot so beautifully. This interview with the director Philip Martin mentions a great quote which provided inspiration for creating the shots of pre-war France:

“The director of photography, Julian Court and I found a touchstone in a quote from the pre-Raphaelite Edward Burne-Jones, who said a painting should be “a beautiful, romantic dream of something that never was, never will be – in a light better than any light that ever shone – in a land no-one can define or remember, only desire… “.”
